Barcelona’s stature as one of football’s titans renders the managerial position an immensely coveted role, despite the club enduring a turbulent period in recent years. Naturally, it’s a proposition that few would find easy to decline.
Reports emerged suggesting Arteta’s readiness to depart Arsenal for the Barcelona job, albeit swiftly dismissed by the Arsenal boss himself. In response, Arsenal is reportedly poised to extend Arteta’s contract, intent on preserving his remarkable contributions at the Emirates.
Nevertheless, Arteta’s potential move to Barcelona has garnered favor among some associated with the Catalan club. Pique, in an interview with The Times, contemplated potential successors to Xavi, highlighting Arteta as a compelling candidate.
“To manage Barça, you need to be a specific type of coach and to understand the way Barça play, so the options are much less,” Pique remarked. “The obvious ones are [Pep] Guardiola, because he had his past here, and he is the best coach right now, and [Arsenal’s Mikel] Arteta. He would be a good one also. He understands Barcelona and played for Barça in the past,” Pique asserted.
Undoubtedly, Barcelona holds a special allure for individuals who have been associated with the club in any capacity. Arteta, likely harbors aspirations of managing Barcelona at some point in his career, given his affiliation with the club during his playing days.
Nonetheless, considering Arteta’s commendable achievements at Arsenal, one may question the rationale behind a premature departure. Arsenal, under Arteta’s stewardship, has made significant strides forward, boasting stability and progress.
Unless compelled by circumstances such as significant player departures, Arsenal appears well-positioned to sustain its upward trajectory. The prospect of parting ways with such a promising project might not seem prudent for Arteta at this juncture.
Conversely, Barcelona’s managerial carousel, witnessing seven permanent appointments since Pep Guardiola’s departure in 2012, suggests that opportunities may arise in the future. While Arteta’s aspirations to manage Barcelona may materialize in due course, the forthcoming summer does not necessarily mark the opportune moment for such a transition.
