The renowned Arsenal icon, has openly admitted that he departed the club “for a woman,” a decision he now views as one of the most significant errors in his career. The esteemed defensive midfielder, who clinched the World Cup, cemented his status as a hero in north London before relocating to Barcelona in 2000, following merely three seasons in England.

Emmanuel Petit’s initial encounter with Arsène Wenger occurred during their time together at Monaco, where he began his career as a budding young talent. Their professional bond flourished over the subsequent seven years. Shortly after Wenger assumed the managerial reins at Arsenal, he orchestrated Petit’s move to England, marking the beginning of a fruitful partnership.

During their tenure, they secured a Premier League title and an FA Cup triumph. Petit’s Arsenal stint coincided with his World Cup victory with France, further solidifying his reputation as a midfield maestro. Reflecting on his pivotal decision to depart for Spain at the dawn of the new millennium, the 53-year-old ruefully acknowledges that remaining at Arsenal and etching his name into the club’s annals would have been the wiser choice.

When pressed on the reason behind his departure from Arsenal, Petit candidly revealed to Stadium Astro, “For a woman.” He elaborated, expressing his enduring affection for Barcelona and Real Madrid, two illustrious footballing giants. Nonetheless, he concedes that remaining with Arsenal would have been the superior course of action, given the adoration, fulfillment, and success he experienced in London.

He laments, “Sometimes the grass is not greener somewhere else. It’s better to stay where you are when you receive love and happiness and you are successful. Why would you leave? Definitely [a big regret]. If I could turn the clock back, I would probably make a different decision.”

Petit’s bond with Arsenal supporters strained further when he transitioned to their city rivals, Chelsea, following a solitary season at Barcelona. The midfield virtuoso spent three seasons plying his trade at Stamford Bridge before hanging up his boots due to complications stemming from knee surgery.
