Mikel Arteta in his interview disclosed that Arsenal are in contention to secure the services of Kylian Mbappé following the confirmation of the striker’s impending departure from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Despite Real Madrid’s strong interest in the French forward, Arteta sees potential for Arsenal to enter the conversation.

Mbappé, whose contract with PSG expires in June, has communicated his intention to leave the club at the end of the season. While Real Madrid remains a frontrunner for his signature, negotiations between the Spanish giants and the player’s camp have yet to yield an agreement, leaving room for other clubs, including those from the English Premier League, to explore opportunities.

Arteta emphasized the significance of considering a player of Mbappé’s calibre, acknowledging Real Madrid’s pursuit but hinting at Arsenal’s potential involvement. He stated, “When there is a player of that calibre, we always have to be in the conversation,” alluding to the ongoing talks surrounding Mbappé’s future.

However, Arteta clarified that he isn’t directly involved in negotiations, suggesting that discussions may be ongoing at higher levels within the club hierarchy. He mentioned, “I am not. Maybe Edu [the sporting director] and the owners are, but I am not in those conversations until the last stage.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Mbappé’s destination, Arteta expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of adding such a top-tier talent to Arsenal’s ranks. He reiterated the club’s ambition to attract elite players and emphasized Arsenal’s rich history as a draw for potential signings.

Arteta’s focus then shifted to Arsenal’s upcoming match against Burnley, where he provided updates on the fitness of several injured players, including Gabriel Jesus, Emile Smith Rowe, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Fabio Vieira. Additionally, he highlighted the progress of Thomas Partey, who has been sidelined since October due to a thigh injury, suggesting a potential return shortly.

Reflecting on Arsenal’s position in the Premier League, Arteta underscored the importance of the remaining fixtures in their pursuit of success. Currently sitting third in the standings, Arsenal trail league leaders Liverpool by a mere two points. Arteta emphasized the lessons learned from the previous season and expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete at the highest level.

Lastly, Arteta conveyed his concern for Roy Hodgson, the manager of Crystal Palace, who was hospitalized after falling ill. Expressing hope for Hodgson’s swift recovery, Arteta praised his dedication to the sport and anticipated his return to the sidelines soon.

In summary, Arteta’s comments indicate Arsenal’s willingness to explore the possibility of signing Mbappé, despite Real Madrid’s apparent advantage in negotiations. The manager’s focus remains on the upcoming challenges in the league, while also extending well-wishes to a fellow manager facing health issues.
