Mikel Arteta publicly speaks on benching two strikers as he finds good replacements in Spain

Amidst reports of an impending summer overhaul, Mikel Arteta is poised to pursue Athletic Bilbao standout Nico Williams, as they seek to revamp their attacking options. Despite enjoying a commendable campaign, Arsenal finds themselves in contention for the Premier League title once more, albeit facing stiff competition from numerous top-flight rivals.

However, with ten teams boasting top scorers surpassing Arsenal’s leading goal-scorer, Bukayo Saka, it’s evident that bolstering their attacking arsenal is imperative. The striking duo of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah has collectively netted a mere nine goals, paling in comparison to the prolific tallies amassed by counterparts like Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah at rival clubs.

Consequently, Arsenal recognizes the pressing need to inject more firepower into their ranks. While January rumours linking Arsenal to Ivan Toney failed to materialize, the club appears poised to intensify their pursuit of additional attacking reinforcements come summer.

According to reports from The Mirror, Arsenal’s primary objective is to secure a winger capable of providing cover and competition for Saka. Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams has emerged as a prime target, having already attracted interest from the North London outfit this season. The 21-year-old winger is reportedly ahead of Wolves’ Pedro Neto on Arsenal’s wish list.

In a bid to facilitate Williams’ potential arrival, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly prepared to part ways with two underperforming attackers. Both Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah are rumoured to be on the chopping block, as Arsenal looks to initiate a significant squad overhaul.

While Nketiah ranks joint-second in Arsenal’s goal-scoring charts, his return of five goals in 21 Premier League appearances falls short of expectations. Similarly, Smith Rowe’s contributions have been limited, with just one assist to his name and sporadic starting opportunities.

In contrast, Williams has proven his worth with six assists and three goals this season, delivering several standout performances. Impressively, he ranks among the top dribblers in La Liga, second only to Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. in successful dribbles. However, Arsenal faces stiff competition for Williams’ signature, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Aston Villa also expressing interest.

Moreover, negotiating with Athletic Bilbao, known for their stringent transfer policies, poses an additional challenge, as the club typically demands payment of release clauses. In addition to Williams, Arsenal manager Arteta is reportedly eyeing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, potentially as a replacement for Thomas Partey if the Ghanaian midfielder is offloaded.
