Sir Jim Ratcliffe who owns 25% stake in Manchester United has accomplished what the Glazers have consistently avoided: engaging with the Club fanbase. After a prolonged 13-month period of takeover negotiations, the confirmation of Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a minority stake at Old Trafford emerged as a Christmas Eve gift for supporters. The investment, amounting to approximately £1.25 billion, designates INEOS to oversee football operations across men’s, women’s, and academy teams.

At 71 years old, Ratcliffe aims to bring top industry professionals into key roles, emphasizing sound decision-making and prudent spending in the transfer market for United’s success. While a promising future seems likely, the fanbase expressed mixed emotions due to lingering concerns about the continued involvement of the Glazers. The Manchester United Supporters Trust conveyed these worries, prompting Ratcliffe to personally address them in a letter, showcasing a rare direct communication approach.

Expressing his commitment to the fans, Ratcliffe wrote, “I wanted to write to you at this time given the critical role of the fans to the future of Manchester United as we recognize our responsibility as custodians of the club on your behalf.” He emphasized the long-term vision, acknowledging the need for time, patience, and professional management to restore Manchester United to its pinnacle in English, European, and world football. Ratcliffe assured supporters that the deal’s details would be discussed publicly only after regulatory sign-off, demonstrating transparency.

Despite the ongoing regulatory process, Ratcliffe has already initiated dialogue with supporters, a notable departure from the Glazers’ distant approach. Unlike the Glazers, who seldom communicated with fans and remained silent during the takeover talks, Ratcliffe’s proactive engagement has resonated positively.

While the Glazers, who obtained majority shares through a gradual acquisition process, have been criticized for their lack of investment in the club, Ratcliffe aims to change this narrative. His proposed investment, subject to Premier League approval, is anticipated to inject $300 million (£245 million) into addressing Old Trafford’s aging infrastructure. This financial commitment, in addition to his bid for a 25 percent stake, signifies Ratcliffe’s dedication to not only football matters but also the physical redevelopment of the stadium.

The Manchester United community is optimistic that Ratcliffe’s involvement could signal the beginning of the end for the Glazers. Although the American family remains the majority shareholder for now, Ratcliffe’s significant individual investment offers a potential shift in the club’s financial dynamics. Ratcliffe’s initial actions have garnered positive reactions, leaving fans hopeful for a promising and transformative era under his ownership.
