FC Barcelona is set to face Las Palmas in their initial 2024 match on January 5th. While Barcelona is poised as the favorites, the focus for Las Palmas revolves around one player – Pedri Gonzalez. A product of the Las Palmas academy, Pedri’s journey to Barcelona began even before his first-team promotion.
Despite being just 17 years old, Pedri’s talent prompted Barcelona to invest €5 million in him. This move proved lucrative for Barcelona, as Pedri has evolved into one of Spain’s premier players. Interestingly, Las Palmas also benefited, receiving additional funds tied to specific performance variables.

In total, Barcelona paid between €20-25 million to Las Palmas, with an extra €5 million contingent on Pedri playing 45 minutes in two more games across La Liga, Copa del Rey, or the Champions League. Currently, Pedri has logged 98 appearances with Barcelona’s first team, leaving him on the brink of triggering the additional payment.
Having played 42 games in 2020-21, 19 in 2021-22, 29 in 2022-23, and 8 in 2023-24, Pedri needs only two more 45-minute appearances to reach the milestone. Notably, one of these games could be against Las Palmas, although Pedri, recovering from a muscle injury, might face a strategic decision from coach Xavi regarding his participation in this specific match.
Despite the potential option to rest Pedri, his pivotal role in the team suggests that achieving his 100th 45-minute appearance for Barcelona is only a matter of time once he fully recovers.
