“I will suspend him from playing, his terrible mistake cost us the well-deserved 3 points” – Mikel Arterta blames star player for loss to Newcastle

Newcastle United disrupted Arsenal’s title chase with a 1-0 victory in their Saturday lunchtime clash, thanks to a decisive goal from Alexander Isak. However, the spotlight wasn’t just on the result but on the underwhelming performance of one Arsenal player who faced significant criticism.

Under manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal has risen as Manchester City’s primary competitor for the Premier League crown, pushing Pep Guardiola’s team close in recent seasons. In the 2022/23 season, they finished just five points behind City, and in 2023/24, the gap was even narrower at two points.

To strengthen their title ambitions, Arteta made tactical adjustments, including giving Leandro Trossard a starting role. However, this strategy has yet to fully succeed, as Trossard has often struggled to make a substantial impact when starting, with his performance against Newcastle serving as a case in point.

Against Newcastle, Trossard’s performance was sluggish, with poor decision-making and limited off-the-ball movement. He failed to break through Newcastle’s solid defense, ultimately making little impact on the pitch. His struggles culminated when he was substituted in the 71st minute for Gabriel Jesus, who has also been under scrutiny this season. Known for his versatility and skill with both feet, Trossard has been a valuable asset off the bench, but when he starts, he often fails to make the same impact.

Arsenal fans voiced their frustration over Trossard’s performance, especially as the team missed the chance to secure points with rivals Liverpool and Manchester City playing winnable matches. One fan tweeted, “Nah seriously every single action from Trossard is poor at this point,” highlighting the general sentiment among the supporters. According to Sofascore, Trossard managed only two shots in his 71 minutes on the pitch, neither of which hit the target. His passing accuracy was 77.3%, but he lost possession 12 times and completed none of his attempted dribbles or long balls, indicating a lack of connection with his teammates.

Trossard’s uninspiring performance hindered Arsenal’s offensive threat. Since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in the 2022/23 season, he has sometimes flown under the radar amid Arsenal’s talented roster, including stars like Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, the latter soon returning to action to the delight of fans.

Trossard’s ongoing struggles could limit opportunities for promising young talent Ethan Nwaneri, who has impressed during limited appearances this season. Nwaneri, eager for more playing time, has shown potential to contribute more consistently, yet his progress could be slowed if Arteta continues to rely on Trossard.

While Trossard brings valuable experience, Arteta’s decision to sideline young talents like Nwaneri and loan out Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira might prove costly in Arsenal’s title pursuit. To sustain a competitive edge, Arteta must balance experience with potential, allowing younger players the chance to grow and contribute meaningfully to the team’s success.
