“He is my best signing so far” – Mikel Arteta hails Arsenal defender for his superb performance this season

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has identified a £40 million defender as his ideal addition to the squad, showing strong admiration for this potential signing.

**Arsenal’s Summer Plans for Defensive Depth**

Arsenal is reportedly targeting new acquisitions in both full-back and centre-back positions this summer. Sporting director Edu is expected to lead these efforts to provide Arteta with more defensive options.

Since the 2022/2023 season, Ben White has excelled in an unconventional role as a right-back, following William Saliba’s impressive rise. White’s performances earned him a new long-term contract in March, though he acknowledges his defensive limitations.

“Some of the videos I have seen, maybe others don’t see it, but if I lost the runner or if I don’t do that, they will probably score. It comes back to doing anything to win,” White commented on his defensive challenges.

“I know I’m not going to stop everyone and I know I’m not the best one-v-one defender, but I know I can do things to help the team in game situations against their winger. Every game, normally the winger is the best player so it’s always a challenge and I have to do my homework and try and stop him.”

Arsenal is reportedly close to securing Ferdi Kadioglu as an alternative to White, with Edu also eyeing another centre-back. The future of Jurrien Timber remains uncertain after he missed the entire 2023/2024 season due to an ACL injury.

If a deal for Kadioglu doesn’t materialize, Girona defender Yan Couto could be another option. The Brazilian, currently on loan at Girona from Manchester City, has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Edu has been advised to consider Couto by a close confidant at Arsenal, with further reports from Tutto Juve confirming their interest.

    **Arteta’s Ideal Signing**

Arteta has privately expressed that Couto would be the perfect addition to strengthen Arsenal’s right-back position. However, Arsenal faces stiff competition for the £40 million-rated defender, with Juventus, Barcelona, and Manchester United also interested.

While it’s debatable whether Manchester City would sell Couto to United, their fierce rival, Arsenal might face similar challenges given the competitive nature of the Premier League. Despite this, City did approve Cole Palmer’s move to Chelsea last summer, indicating they might be open to selling Couto.

As Arsenal prepares for the upcoming transfer window, Arteta and Edu’s decisions on defensive reinforcements will be crucial for the team’s success next season.
