Former Arsenal striker urges Mikel Arteta to sell off top player worth £60 million pounds

In discussing Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of the January transfer window, former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell expressed his views on the delicate situation facing The Gunners. The question arises: should they introduce a significant mid-season addition and potentially disrupt team dynamics?

Campbell, speaking on talkSPORT with Dean Saunders, firmly advocated for Arteta to free up funds for Arsenal in January. He suggested that making Emile Smith Rowe available for transfer could be a strategic move, acknowledging the difficulty of parting ways with a promising young player. Saunders hinted at using Smith Rowe’s limited playing time as leverage to navigate financial fair play regulations.

Campbell responded, emphasizing the need for ruthlessness in pursuing a title. While reluctant to see homegrown talents like Smith Rowe depart, he argued that making strategic player trades could pave the way for acquiring talents like Ivan Toney.

However, the sale of Smith Rowe alone might not be sufficient to secure a deal for Toney, considering the mentioned £60m asking price for Smith Rowe and potential additional costs for the Brentford striker. Furthermore, with defensive reinforcements deemed a priority for Arsenal in the upcoming month, a striker acquisition might have to be deferred.

Acknowledging the emotional impact on fans, Campbell maintained that Arteta’s ability to free up funds through player sales, such as Smith Rowe and potentially Aaron Ramsdale, is a pragmatic approach. Despite the inevitable reluctance to see favorites leave, he questioned the rationale of keeping them on the bench.

Nevertheless, one player Arsenal fans are likely reluctant to lose is Gabriel Magalhaes, who has attracted interest from Saudi Pro League clubs. While recognizing that certain players may be expendable, Campbell underscored the significance of retaining key assets like Magalhaes.

In essence, Campbell’s perspective aligns with the strategic necessity for Arsenal to make calculated player trades in the upcoming transfer window to strengthen the squad, even if it involves parting ways with beloved players.
