Dan Kilpatrick has shared on The Standard’s live transfer blog that Alejo Veliz is en route to Spain to finalize a loan move to Sevilla.
Veliz, who joined Tottenham from Rosario Central last summer, has accumulated eight appearances and scored one goal. Despite the opportunities arising from injuries in Ange Postecoglou’s squad, the 20-year-old is yet to secure a starting spot with the Lilywhites.
With the arrival of Timo Werner and slim prospects of game time for Veliz in the second half of the season, Tottenham has opted to loan out the promising striker. The Athletic’s David Ornstein first reported Sevilla’s interest in securing Veliz temporarily.
Kilpatrick has now disclosed that the Argentine is on his way to Spain for a medical, sealing a loan deal with Quique Sanchez Flores’ side until the end of the season. Importantly, the loan agreement does not include an option to buy, and Sevilla has assured Tottenham that Veliz will receive regular playing time at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
This decision by Spurs seems prudent, recognizing Veliz’s need for consistent competitive football, an opportunity not readily available at Tottenham. However, one might ponder whether a move to an English club, even in the Championship, could have better acclimated the young striker to the pace and intensity of the English game. Perhaps this is a consideration Spurs will explore in the upcoming summer transfer window.
