DONE DEAL: After more than 11 years, Tottenham bids farewell to its long serving player who departs for American side on permanent transfer

Officially confirming his departure after an impressive eleven and a half years, seven of which he served as the club captain, Tottenham Hotspur bids farewell to the standout goalkeeper of their Premier League era. Today, the club formally disclosed that Hugo Lloris is parting ways to join the MLS team Los Angeles FC.

Back in 2012, when Hugo joined Tottenham , the excitement among Spurs fans was palpable. Landing a goalkeeper of his caliber was a significant coup. Not only was he a young and talented shot-stopper, but he was already the No. 1 goalkeeper for France. At that time, Spurs had only qualified for the Champions League once in their history, making it a puzzling decision for Hugo to choose them over seemingly larger and more prestigious clubs.

Nonetheless, he made the choice to join Spurs. After an initial settling-in period, Hugo displaced veteran keeper Brad Friedel as the team’s starting goalkeeper that season. Over time, he not only established himself as the best goalkeeper in Spurs’ modern era but also as one of the Premier League’s finest. Hugo concludes his Spurs career as the seventh-highest appearance maker in the club’s history and the most-capped player for France. Along the way, he started in a Champions League final and clinched a World Cup title—a remarkable career by any standard.

However, the inevitable march of time caught up with him, and in recent seasons, it became evident that Hugo’s performance levels had declined. With the arrival of manager Ange Postecoglou, it was widely known that Hugo was ready for a new challenge. While he almost made a move during the past summer, it didn’t materialize.

Now, Hugo has found his new challenge in the United States. He is exchanging the grey skies of London for the sunny warmth of Los Angeles, joining the same club where Gareth Bale played after leaving Real Madrid. The reported deal is for one year, and interestingly, Hugo is not designated as LAFC’s Player, with an option to extend if needed.

The decision to part ways has been looming for some time, acknowledged by both Spurs and Hugo. The completion of the deal is contingent on Lloris obtaining a work visa, which is expected to be a formality. Tottenham has announced plans to celebrate Hugo’s illustrious career and bid him farewell during halftime of their upcoming match against Bournemouth, a moment fans hope to witness on television.
