Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has etched his name in Premier League history books following his instrumental role in the Gunners’ dominant 6-0 victory over city rivals West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.
Building on their pivotal 3-1 triumph over league leaders Liverpool a week earlier, Mikel Arteta’s squad swiftly seized control, storming to a commanding 4-0 lead in the first half against the Hammers. Odegaard showcased his playmaking prowess by setting up Arsenal’s fourth goal, expertly converted by Leandro Trossard.
Continuing his influential display, Odegaard orchestrated Bukayo Saka’s second goal and Arsenal’s fifth of the afternoon shortly after the hour mark. The rout was sealed with a sublime strike from former West Ham player Declan Rice just two minutes late.
While Saka earned the Man of the Match accolade, Odegaard stood out as one of many exceptional performers for Arsenal in their record-breaking Premier League away triumph.
Remarkably, Odegaard became the first player in Premier League history to complete over 100 passes (107), create at least five chances (seven), and assist multiple goals (two) in a single match since records began in the 2003-04 season.
Reflecting on Arsenal’s stellar team effort, which propelled them to within two points of league leaders Liverpool, Odegaard expressed his satisfaction: “It was a really good game and strong performance… I liked the performance and the mentality of the team.”
Emphasizing the squad’s relentless pursuit of improvement, Odegaard commended their unwavering determination: “When you go three or four nil up, it’s easy to drop a little bit, but we just kept on going and wanted more. That’s why I liked today.”
