Tottenham Hotspur defender has disclosed that he is adapting to an unfamiliar position under manager Ange Postecoglou.
The 21-year-old defender joined Spurs in August 2022 for a reported fee of approximately €18 million but was immediately loaned out to Italian side Udinese. Upon returning to Tottenham at the beginning of the season, he quickly established himself as a key player for the North London club, delivering impressive performances. However, his recent comments have shed light on a surprising aspect of his role.
Despite his success, Udogie admitted uncertainty about his suitability for the role assigned to him at Tottenham. He expressed unfamiliarity with the style of play demanded of him, particularly his increased involvement in attacking moves. Nevertheless, he acknowledged his gradual adaptation and credited his defensive skills honed during his time in Italy for aiding his transition.
“The defensive techniques I learned in Italy are proving beneficial,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “I’m not entirely certain if this role suits me perfectly, as it’s unfamiliar territory for me. However, I’m becoming more accustomed to it with time.”
While Udogie has showcased his defensive reliability, his contributions in the attacking phase have also been noteworthy, tallying two goals and three assists across various competitions. His versatility and potential as a modern fullback bode well for Tottenham, who are eager for his continued growth and consistent high-level performance.
It’s possible that Udogie anticipated a more conservative defensive role upon joining Tottenham. Nonetheless, his adaptation to his current responsibilities has been impressive, and he has thrived in the role assigned to him.
