“This will create more problems” – Tottenham head coach, Ange Postecoglou makes open statement on the proposed “Blue cards” for Football

Ange Postecoglou, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, strongly opposes the potential introduction of blue cards and sin bins in football, warning that such measures would be detrimental to the sport. Recent discussions have suggested the possibility of trialling blue cards for dissent, leading to a 10-minute sin bin for offenders.

However, FIFA has clarified that such trials will not take place in elite football, and the International Football Association Board will not finalize plans for the sin bin trial until the following month.

Postecoglou expressed firm opposition to these proposals, stating his belief that they would hurt the game. He argued that having one team down to 10 men for 10 minutes would disrupt the flow of the game and lead to tactical time-wasting strategies.

In Postecoglou’s view, football should be moving towards simplification and decluttering, rather than introducing additional complexities. Ahead of Tottenham’s upcoming match against Brighton, Postecoglou also addressed other aspects of the game, including recent controversies surrounding goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s performance.

He defended Vicario against criticism, particularly regarding his handling of corners, and revealed that the club had sought clarification from match officials regarding certain decisions. Postecoglou emphasized the need for consistency in officiating, especially concerning encroachment in the penalty area.

Regarding Vicario’s performance, Postecoglou praised his goalkeeper’s efforts and highlighted the challenges goalkeepers face with increased scrutiny from VAR. Despite statistical odds against Tottenham’s title aspirations, Postecoglou remained optimistic, suggesting that any chance, no matter how slim, should be pursued with determination.

With captain Son Heung-min returning to the squad, Postecoglou hopes for a boost in their title ambitions, embracing the slim chance of success with a positive outlook.
