“He is our man” – Edu names skilled Bayern player worth £87 million as a must-sign target for Arsenal

Arsenal, currently occupying the fourth spot in the Premier League, face a challenging phase despite their Christmas Day lead. Plagued by back-to-back losses and an FA Cup exit, Mikel Arteta’s team is looking to revive its form during the winter break.

The team’s struggles, particularly in the attacking front with just one goal in 63 shots, have led to speculation about potential reinforcements. Among the rumoured prospects is Jamal Musiala, a highly regarded 20-year-old from Bayern Munich, drawing interest from Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

Reports suggest that Musiala has yet to finalize a new deal with Bayern, fueling speculation about a possible move. However, his current contract, with over two years remaining, and a reported valuation of €100m (£87m), makes any potential deal a significant investment.

The Gunners, known for their willingness to spend on top talent, view Musiala as a potential competitor or even a replacement for Martin Odegaard. Odegaard, named Arsenal captain in 2022, has had a mixed season after an impressive previous campaign, prompting consideration for reinforcements in the attacking midfield.

Comparing the two players, Odegaard’s leadership qualities and impressive match intelligence have been evident during his tenure. While he excelled last season with 15 goals and seven assists, this season has seen a dip in his performance with four goals and three assists in 17 league starts.

Musiala, labelled a “genius” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, presents a younger alternative, having matched Odegaard’s overall league goal contributions in fewer starts. With five goals and two assists in just eight Bundesliga games this season, Musiala’s potential is evident.

Analyzing their underlying statistics, Odegaard has advantages in progressive passes, passing accuracy, and shot-creating actions per 90. On the other hand, Musiala outperforms in non-penalty expected goals and assists, progressive carries, goal-creating actions, and successful take-ons per 90.

The crucial factor working in Musiala’s favour is his age, being five years junior to Odegaard. If talent scout Jacek Kulig’s prediction of Musiala being “destined for greatness” holds, the German’s potential to surpass Odegaard’s output as he matures is a compelling consideration for Arsenal.

In summary, Arsenal’s interest in Jamal Musiala arises as a strategic move to strengthen their attacking midfield options, potentially providing competition for Odegaard or serving as a long-term replacement. The decision hinges on factors like contract negotiations, valuation, and the ongoing performance of both players.
