Despite the challenges of FFP, Arsenal contacts rival Premier League club as Arteta persists in signing an incredible star midfielder worth £110 million

Arsenal continues to express interest in securing the services of Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz if he becomes available. Luiz has been a standout performer for Villa this season, contributing to their unexpected push towards the Champions League positions.

Arsenal’s admiration for Luiz dates back to the summer, with ongoing interest in acquiring him persisting, despite Villa’s reluctance to sell. Football Transfers reports that Luiz remains a primary target for the Gunners, particularly in bolstering their midfield options.

Currently, Arsenal prioritizes securing a striker in the January transfer window and is exploring options such as Ivan Toney, Dusan Vlahovic, and Joshua Zirkzee. Financial Fair Play (FFP) constraints may necessitate player sales before acquiring a top striker, with Eddie Nketiah being among the potential departures this month.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, also expresses interest in strengthening the team’s defense by signing a defender if a suitable opportunity arises. However, any potential move for Luiz is likely postponed until the summer transfer window.

Securing a defensive midfielder like Luiz could provide Arsenal with notable benefits. It would afford Declan Rice greater freedom in a box-to-box role while offering more protection to Martin Odegaard. Additionally, considering the extended absences of Thomas Partey, Arteta may find tactical flexibility in his absence.

The acquisition of the highly-regarded Luiz would be a significant boost for Arsenal. Nonetheless, the reported asking price of around £110m, though seemingly unrealistic, underscores the potential financial challenges associated with such a purchase. Edu, Arsenal’s director of football, faces considerable tasks ahead in navigating the complexities of the transfer market.
